Photography courses in India

Six kinds of photography course exist in India, from a free online certificate to a four year degree. They differ in length, in cost, and in how much of your time is spent actually shooting. This guide sets them side by side, with what each one leaves out of its published fee.

The short answer

A diploma is the shortest full professional route, usually one year, and ends in a portfolio. A degree takes three to four years and carries university recognition. A certificate teaches one skill, not a career.

The short answer

What kinds of photography course can you do in India?

India offers six routes: an online certificate, a classroom certificate, a diploma, a bachelor’s degree, a postgraduate diploma or master’s, and a small new category of AI filmmaking courses. A diploma is the shortest full professional route, usually one year. A degree takes three to four years and carries university recognition. Certificates teach one skill, not a career.

Read the fee column carefully. Almost every published range covers tuition only, for a student living at home. The fee section below sets out what those numbers leave out.

Course type 01

Certificate courses in photography

A certificate course runs from a few hours to about six months and costs between nothing and roughly Rs 50,000. It teaches camera handling, exposure and basic composition. It is the right first step for a hobbyist or someone testing the field, and it is not a professional qualification. No studio hires on a certificate alone.

Who it suits

The tester

  • You are not sure yet whether this is a career
  • You are in school or already in another job
  • You want the camera to stop feeling confusing

3 to 6 months

Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000

What you get

One skill, not a career

  • Exposure, aperture, shutter, ISO
  • Basic composition and framing
  • Sometimes one genre, often wedding

Be honest about

The limits

  • No lighting depth, no client work
  • Rarely any feedback on your images
  • Not accepted as a qualification anywhere

Good starting point, poor finishing point

Course type 02

Diploma courses in photography

A diploma runs six months to two years, most commonly one year, and is the shortest route to being employable. It is practice led rather than academic, and it usually ends in a portfolio. The real spread is far wider than most listings admit. A short day scholar diploma starts near Rs 50,000, while a premium one year residential diploma reaches Rs 5,00,000. The listings that quote Rs 30,000 to Rs 2,00,000 are counting only the cheapest, tuition only end of the market.

Course type 03

Degree courses, BA and BFA in photography

A bachelor’s degree in photography or applied arts takes three to four years and costs Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 6,00,000 in tuition. It is the only route that gives you a UGC recognised degree, which matters if you may later teach, take a government job, or study abroad. It is also the slowest route, and much of the time goes on academic papers rather than shooting.

Choose a degree if

The paper matters

  • You may teach or take a government post later
  • You are considering a master’s abroad
  • Your family needs a recognised degree

The trade

  • Three extra years before you earn

  • Clients ask for a portfolio, not a degree

Course type 04

PG diploma and master's courses

A postgraduate diploma or master’s takes one to two years and needs a bachelor’s degree to enter. This is the widest fee spread in Indian photography education, from around Rs 12,000 at a state university to about Rs 8,00,000 at a premium private academy, for courses of comparable length. Price here tells you almost nothing about quality, so judge these on the work their students produce, never on the fee.

Course type 05

Online photography courses

Online courses are the cheapest way to learn the theory, often free and rarely above Rs 5,000. They work well for exposure, editing software and business basics. What they cannot give you is the thing that actually makes a photographer, which is someone experienced looking at your image and telling you why it does not work. Lighting in particular is close to unteachable on video alone.

A reasonable plan: use a free online course to confirm you enjoy this, then spend money on a course where a human critiques your work.

Course type 06

AI filmmaking and AI integrated courses

This category did not exist three years ago and most course listings still do not include it. An AI filmmaking course teaches generative image and video tools inside real production, alongside camera, lighting and editing, rather than instead of them. If you are choosing a course in 2026 that will still be current in 2030, this is the question worth asking every institution you shortlist.

What to ask

Is AI taught, or mentioned?

  • Which tools, by name
  • Is there a finished AI project on record
  • Who on the faculty has actually made one

The honest risk

Tool courses date fast

  • A course built on one tool ages in months
  • Craft and story judgement do not
  • Prefer AI inside production, not as a module

Where it stands

Almost nothing residential

  • Most AI courses are short and online
  • Very few are one year and full time
  • Fees run Rs 5,000 to Rs 5,00,000

The number nobody breaks down

What does a photography course actually cost?

Published fee ranges disagree with each other, and all of them understate the top of the market. One site lists a diploma at Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000, another at Rs 50,000 to Rs 2,00,000. In practice a one year residential diploma in India runs from about Rs 3,50,000 to Rs 5,00,000, and a premium private academy can reach Rs 8,00,000. The listings are quoting tuition only, for a student living at home, without equipment. The real cost of a year is tuition plus living plus gear.

To make the comparison honest, here is our own fee in full, line by line, including the parts most institutions do not publish.

Decide by goal, not by brochure

Which photography course should you choose?

Work backwards from what you want two years from now, not from what a course is called. The single most useful question is whether you need a certificate on a wall, a portfolio in your hand, or simply to find out if you like this at all.

If

You want to know if you like it

Take a free online course first. Spend nothing. Decide after a month.

If

You want to work within a year

Take a one year practice led diploma that ends in a portfolio.

If

You need a recognised degree

Take a BA or BFA at a university. Accept the extra three years.

If

You already have a degree

A PG diploma or a one year professional diploma both work. The diploma is faster.

If

You want one specific genre

Choose a course whose specialisation is built in, not sold as an add on.

If

You are thinking about the next decade

Ask every shortlisted institution what it teaches about AI, and what it has actually produced.

Looking for where to study rather than what to study? That is a different question, answered on our guide to the best photography colleges in India.

Common questions

Photography courses in India, questions people ask

Which photography course is best in India?

There is no single best course, only the best course for a goal. If you want to be working within a year, a one year practice led diploma is the strongest route. If you need a UGC recognised qualification for teaching or a government post, a BA or BFA is the only option. If you are still deciding whether photography is for you, start with a free online certificate.

Can I do a photography course after 12th?

Yes. Class 12 from any board and any stream is the usual minimum for certificate, diploma and bachelor’s courses in India. Science, commerce and arts students are all eligible. No prior photography experience is required for most courses, and several certificate courses accept students after class 10.

How much do photography courses cost in India?

Online certificates run from free to about Rs 5,000. Classroom certificates cost Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000. Day scholar diplomas cost Rs 50,000 to Rs 2,00,000. A fully residential one year diploma, including food and accommodation, runs from about Rs 3,50,000 to Rs 5,00,000, and a premium private academy can reach Rs 8,00,000. Bachelor’s degrees cost Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 6,00,000 in tuition alone. Remember that most published figures exclude living costs and equipment.

Is a diploma or a degree better for photography?

A diploma is faster, more practical and ends in a portfolio, which is what clients and studios actually ask to see. A degree takes three to four years and gives you a university qualification, which matters for teaching, government roles and study abroad. Neither is better in the abstract. Choose by what you need on record.

How long is a photography course in India?

Online and classroom certificates run from a few hours to six months. Diplomas run six months to two years, most commonly one year. Bachelor’s degrees take three to four years. Postgraduate diplomas and master’s degrees take one to two years.

Do photography courses include cinematography?

Increasingly, yes. Most professional work now demands both stills and video, so a photography only course leaves you unable to take half the jobs available. When comparing courses, check whether cinematography, editing and colour grading are taught as part of the main programme or sold as separate add ons.

Do I need my own camera for a photography course?

For most courses, yes. Institutions differ on what they lend, but you should budget for your own camera, lenses and laptop regardless, because you will need them the day you finish. Ask any shortlisted institution exactly what equipment is provided and what you must bring, before you pay.

Are online photography courses worth it?

They are worth it for theory, editing software and business basics, and they cost almost nothing. They are weak at lighting and at the one thing that improves a photographer fastest, which is an experienced person critiquing your images. Use an online course to decide, not to qualify.

Should a photography course teach AI?

In 2026, a course that does not address generative tools is teaching an incomplete picture of the industry. What matters is how it is taught. AI used inside real production, alongside camera and lighting craft, ages well. A standalone module on one tool ages within months. Ask what the institution has actually produced with AI, not what it lists in a syllabus.

What is the salary after a photography course in India?

Entry level salaries commonly sit between Rs 3,00,000 and Rs 5,00,000 a year, rising with experience and specialisation. Be aware that most photographers in India are freelance rather than salaried, so income is irregular in the early years and depends heavily on the strength of your portfolio and your ability to find clients.
