The model
What is the Creative Hut Gurukul?
The Creative Hut Gurukul is the traditional Guru and Shishya model, rebuilt for photography, cinematography and filmmaking. Mentors and students live on one campus and learn together, not only in classrooms but through meals, walks, creative discussions and real practice. This is a second home, not a timetable.
It blends ancient discipline with a modern, systematic way of learning. We admit only thirty students a year, from around the world, on purpose, so every student is known, guided and given the space to grow. For one year, this is not where you study. It is where you live.
Established 2007 under Creative Hut Education Pvt. Ltd. Supported by the National Education and Research Foundation. Begun in Ahmedabad, now the world's first photography Gurukul, a fully residential photography and film college in Kerala, on a campus of over 1,70,000 square feet.

The world is changing. This is why a mentor matters more, not less.
Artificial intelligence can do almost everything, and it can teach almost any tool. What it cannot give you is a person who knows you, believes in you, and corrects you honestly. As the tools grow easier, the human beside you becomes the rarest part of learning. That human, a mentor who takes your growth personally, has been the centre of the Gurukul since 2007. The world simply caught up to why it matters.
Why it exists
A degree is not the same as direction.
Despite rising marks, many students still feel lost or unprepared for life. They carry degrees, but not direction. Skills, but not confidence. Knowledge, but not purpose. Many struggle quietly with pressure, fear of failure and isolation, and were never guided to find what they love. So we built a different kind of learning.

How it works
Understood as a person, not measured as a grade.
Here the Guru and the Shishya live and learn together, and that closeness changes everything. A mentor who shares your day sees your real strengths and weaknesses, and guides you through both. No one is ranked against the next. Each student is understood as an individual, and the teaching adapts to their own rhythm.
In a fast, screen driven world, young people often feel lonely or unheard. A Gurukul answers that with belonging and emotional safety. Students live, eat, learn and grow together, and the bonds they form strengthen not just their careers but their lives.
What we truly build
Be the master of the problem, not the master of the tool.
Any tool can be learned, and tools change every few months, so tool knowledge alone expires quickly. What lasts is seeing a problem clearly, framing it, and judging the answer. We build that through Head, Heart and Hands.

Students often say they feel they have joined a home, not a college. That is what allows not just learning, but healing. Not just skill, but self respect.
The roots
Ancient wisdom, modern instruments.
We believe education is not only information. It is wisdom, awareness and responsibility. Our learning draws on Indian knowledge systems and indigenous practice that connect a student to nature, culture and a deeper understanding of themselves.
Students learn through observation and real practice. They study biomimicry, finding design and health in nature. They take part in traditional cooking, farming and self care, and build critical thinking from lived experience. The model is aligned with the national Skill India vision of a skilled, self reliant youth.
A living lesson
When the tsunami came, the Onge people of the Andaman Islands read the wind, the water and the animals, and reached safety without any modern technology.
Knowledge that lives in observation, not on a screen. That is the spirit we teach in: learn from nature, from experience, and from each other.
The tools may be digital, but the foundation is deeply human.

Editing and grading on DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro and Photoshop.
The layer on top
A current AI pipeline for generating, editing and analysing content, taught inside real production.
We are pro-AI, on purpose. We simply teach the trained hand that decides what the instrument should do.
Technology is not a distraction. In the right hands it becomes a tool of transformation.

AI Films
For over eighteen years, students have come here from across India, rural and urban, academic toppers and school dropouts, dreamers and doubters, and found not just a course but a life defining change. More than five hundred alumni now work as photographers, cinematographers, editors, filmmakers and educators, many running their own studios, on the strength of 550+ portfolios and 100+ films made on this campus.
And in recent years that same model produced Rising Embers, the world's first AI feature film made inside a film school, crewed by twenty students. Not an exercise. A film headed for the screen.
These are not academic results. They are life results.
Students who once could not speak in class have gone on to give public talks.
Students who had never held a camera have made photo stories recognised nationally.

How the college functions.
Do the mentors really live on campus?
Yes. Abin Alex and Anu Joseph live on the Gurukul campus with their family, so guidance and support are there through the day, not only in class hours.
Is the Gurukul fully residential?
Yes. It is a one year, fully residential college in Kottayam, Kerala, with hostels on campus and food on all working days. Students live, eat, learn and grow together.
How is this different from a normal college?
You live where you learn, you are guided as a person rather than graded, and you are shaped in character and confidence, not only in skills. It is a way of living, not a timetable.
How many students join each year?
Thirty. The small batch is deliberate, so every student is known and mentored personally.
Who can join?
Anyone who has completed Class 12, from any board or stream, and graduates too. No prior filmmaking or photography experience is needed.
Is this an AI college or a photography and filmmaking college?
It is a photography, cinematography and filmmaking college first, with AI as one instrument on top. You build the human and visual foundation before the tools, and it stays deeply human.
