The Photography History Calendar

The world's first calendar of photography's history

The Photography History Calendar is the world's first calendar built around the history of photography. Launched at Creative Hut Academy on 5 February 2014, it lays the whole timeline of the craft, from the day the word "photography" was coined to the cameras of today, onto a single calendar. Eight researchers built it, and seven record books recognise it.

World's First Calendar

Seven record books, one calendar: the world's first built on the history of photography.

The idea

The whole story of photography, month by month

Most calendars mark the days. This one marks the milestones. A team of Creative Hut researchers set out to understand photography from its very beginning, and turned that study into a calendar that carries the history and the present of the craft in one place.

It answers the questions most of us never think to ask. When was the word "photography" first used, and by whom? Which was the first commercial camera, the first photograph, the first colour photograph? Alongside the timeline sit the photographers whose work shaped everything after them.
